How High should my Dip Bars be?

formel_optimale_joehe_dip_barren

Frequent inquiries are received regarding the optimal height for dip bars. The answer can be found in this article. A formula is also provided to calculate the perfect height of the dip bars.

Please note that the information refers to dip bars from klimmzugstangen.de, which are currently offered in the following heights: 90 cm, 100 cm, or 110 cm.

Dip bars enable many different exercises that can be incorporated into a fitness routine or calisthenics training. The most well-known exercise on the dip bars (the dip station or parallel bars) is the parallel bar support or the classic dip exercise. During this exercise, the body is lowered from the support position and pushed back up with the arms. The legs are usually bent backward at the knees.

Why is an optimal dip bar height necessary?

For the parallel bar support and other exercises, the dip bars must be neither too low nor too high.

  • If the dip bars are too low, the knees will touch the floor during execution. This is annoying and disrupts the training.

  • If the dip bars are too high, getting into the support position becomes difficult or impossible. In the long run, this is also not a good solution.

Formula for calculating the optimal dip bar height

The optimal height of the dip bars depends on body height. Based on experience, the optimal height is determined when the following applies:

Optimal height of the dip bars = 0.5 x body height

Calculation example: For a body height of 180 cm, the optimal dip bar height is 90 cm (90 cm = 0.5 x 180 cm).

The optimal dip bar height ensures that the floor is not touched at the lowest point of the dip exercise. At the same time, it ensures that the toes do not reach the floor while in the support position. Thus, there is no contact with the floor throughout the entire exercise.

Body height and good dip bar height

It is technically complex to manufacture dip bars for every specific body height. For this reason, klimmzugstangen.de offers three standard heights: 90 cm, 100 cm, and 110 cm. These standard heights fit almost all body sizes, regardless of gender.

For a body height of around 160 cm, the 90 cm high dip bars are recommended. At first glance, the 90 cm high dip bars might seem too high, as for this body height (according to the formula above), approximately 80 cm high dip bars would be optimal. However, the 10 cm difference in height is not a disadvantage. With the higher dip bars, there is simply slightly more legroom.

Optimal dip bar height with straight legs

If bending the legs during the parallel bar support is not desired, the dip bars naturally need to be higher. The ideal height of the bars is then around 75% of the body height. With a body height of 184 cm, the dip bars would therefore need to be 138 cm high.

Dip bar height and other exercises

It should be noted that the optimal dip bar height is also important for the exercises listed below. Some of these exercises are described in detail in the guide, see for example Dips, chest and triceps exercises on dip bars for a strong upper body or Dip bar exercises for chest or triceps.

  • Swinging in the support position

  • Support walking with swinging

  • Hanging in the inverted hang

  • Russian Dips / Elbow Dips

  • Australian Pull Ups

  • Straight Bar Dips
